La Halle aux grains et aux marchands

The first thing to be seen in the square is the covered market, designed in 1561 by Roger de Sarrieu, Lord of Martres, captain in the army of François I and instigator of various building projects in the village. The hall, which consisted of three sections, was modified in 1920 to accommodate the war memorial and the present-day square. The large stone pillars of the old hall now support the current village hall (formerly an abattoir supported by wooden pillars known as a “tuerie”).

The only clock in the village was located on the street side at the top of the hall. It marked the working hours of the earthenware workers. One person, the “bayle”, was responsible for winding it every day. Later, a clock with four dials was installed on the bell tower.
