Le jardin Public

The current public garden and the Place de la bascule were occupied by the former cemetery, the chapel of St Jean-Baptiste, and the Pâtus, “the hospital of Saint-Jacques, and the garden of Saint-Jacques”. Pilgrims passing through and the needy found help and comfort in this modest building run by the brotherhood of Monsieur Saint-Jacques. Today, nothing remains of these buildings. Only a plan dating from the beginning of the 19th century provides us with valuable information. However, the Société de Saint-Jacques has taken over from the old brotherhood and is involved in various charitable activities and heritage conservation.

“La confraria de Monsenhor Sanct Jacmes apostol de nostre senhor”.

“Le cementeri del dict loc dict de Sanct Johan” – (16th century text).

Continue along this route via rue du Docteur Toigne (to the left of the public garden), then rue de la Case. These streets will lead you to the Case de Montserrat.
