Originally a small Gallo-Roman village built on the Montjoie promontory and bordered by the Hourride and Garonne rivers, Cazères appears in history in medieval times. The first church was built here. Successively under the control of the House of Comminges and then the County of Toulouse, in the 14th century Cazères came under the control of the House of Foix, then ruled by Gaston Phoebus. During this period, the town suffered from the troubles and wars that ravaged the region. In 1355, the original church was destroyed by English troops. At the end of the 14th century, work began on building a new church, to be named after Notre-Dame and whose patron saint was Sainte Quitterie.
With its Maison Garonne, a centre for interpreting the history of the town, its links with the river and its commitment to preserving the natural environment of the Garonne, the town of Cazères is undeniably turned towards the river, its heritage and biodiversity.
Its landscaped quays are ideal for peaceful strolls along the river and for fishing. Its Garonne garden and reed bed complete a signposted Garonne trail lasting almost 3 hours, where young and old alike can freely discover all the facets and history of the commune.
The church of Notre Dame de l’Assomption and its treasure trove of religious art complete an exceptional historical heritage.
Themed tours are regularly organised by the Tourist Office and Maison Garonne to take visitors “to the heart” of the town’s history.
Peaceful, natural but also dynamic, the town has developed a range of sports and leisure facilities to suit all year round: fishing centre, water sports centre, fitness trail, city park, playground, bowling green, stadiums, tennis courts, gymnasium, dojo, sports halls… and a swimming pool open from June to September.
A varied programme of annual events completes the vitality of the area: the traditional Flower Festival on Whit Monday, the Nature Festival with a market of local craftsmen and producers, the “Irréduc’Trail” nature race in September and the Garonne Festival in July!
