The Le Comtal residential care home is hosting a group exhibition showcasing the mosaic works created throughout the year by the residents of the Mosaic workshop. Thirteen artists are each exhibiting at least one piece.
In the workshop, we have started working with mosaics using different materials – terracotta, wood and handcrafted glass – whilst learning to create more three-dimensional compositions. The idea was to create a series of works, letting the materials guide our hands. But our aim is to create artworks that can be exhibited outside the centre.
The idea has been set in motion: everyone sketches the project they wish to create, with the brief being ‘movement within the material’. The strokes are tentative and hesitant on the blank sheet of paper, but lines and colours begin to emerge as the days go by.
The next stage involves choosing the materials, bearing in mind that these may change during the creative process, allowing for great freedom of expression. Step by step, the skill of cutting the tesserae is acquired, the movements become more refined, and emotions emerge.
The mosaic takes shape, gently, slowly. It is a language that each person makes their own.
The public is also invited to the exhibition opening, which will take place on Wednesday 22 July 2026 at 3.00 pm, in the presence of the residents of the mosaic workshop at the Le Comtal residential care home.
