Through this exhibition, Sophie and François Leteuil explore what deeply inspires their creative work: materials, primal forms, ancient myths and time-honoured techniques.
Earth, stone, fire, ink and raw materials are never merely materials. They become the traces of an ancient memory, still alive, still active.
Their approaches move in opposite directions, yet converge in a shared quest for origins.
Sophie Leteuil begins with moulded clay to bring forth figures that seem to have emerged from an archaic imagination: goddesses, presences, mythological forms. Her hand follows a sensitive, instinctive, almost buried memory.
François Leteuil takes the opposite path. Through drawing and form, he traces mythological narratives back to their essence: a raw, stripped-back, primordial material. His work resembles an archaeology of the gaze.
Thus, one brings myth to life from the material, whilst the other seeks out the material through myth.
The works engage in a dialogue with one another like fragments of a broader narrative: that of a humanity which, since time immemorial, has been shaping forms to understand the world and mark its presence within it. Ancient figures, idols, bodies and symbols reappear here, transformed, displaced, reinvented.
A shared spirit flows through ceramics, sculpture, drawing and raw materials: that of a return to one’s roots which is anything but nostalgic. On the contrary, ‘Racines’ speaks of a memory in motion, of a past that continues to inhabit our contemporary perspective.
For our roots are not merely behind us.
They continue to grow within us.
