The origin of the village’s name comes from the Latin « mons » (mountain, hill) and « astruc » (well situated). Montastruc le Vieux was abandoned in the 19th century and the new village was built on another ridge. The church of St-Michel was rebuilt in 1865. The view of the hills and the Pyrenees from here is much appreciated. It is a small farming village, where you can visit the 17th-century Moulin de Bacques and the 16th- and 19th-century Château.
